With his imaginative and layered narrative, Angjelkov explores the subtle relationships between history, personal memory, and social circumstances that affect the emotional and private.

Biography

Igor Angjelkov (b. 1974) graduated at the Interdisciplinary Journalism Studies, and completed his master’s degree in Media and Communications at the „Iustinianus Primus Faculty of Law“ – Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje. He is actively engaged in periodicals with many critiques and reviews in the fields of literature, music and film. In the last twenty years, as co-owner and editor in the “Ili-Ili” publishing house, he openly participates and creates the literary scene in Macedonia. He is a member of the Society of Writers of Macedonia, PEN centre and the International Association of Film Critics FIPRESCI.

His official debut as a writer was in 2006 with the short story collection “Meek stories” (2006), some of whose stories were published in a few literary magazines in the Balkans. His novels “Off-road” (2010) and “Photo synthesis” (2013) had an excellent widespread reception and several re-editions. In the “pandemic” times, his novel “Shrapnel” (2020) was published, as well as new collection of short stories “Double Exposure“ (2022). In post-pandemic times, he published the novels „Mina“ (2023) and „Vetrilishte“ (2024).

Angjelkov is known for his film commentary in the media as the author of the film radio show “REDRUM” on Kanal 103 (1997-2003)  and of the film magazine „Filmopolis” on TV Telma (2003-2014). From 2018 he has been the program selector of the International Film Festival „KineNova“ Skopje. His oeuvre includes three journalistic works in the field of film art: “Film.mkd” (2016), which won the State Publication Award “Mito Hadzivasilev – Jasmin”, followed by “Filmski Grad” (2018), „Filmotopia“ (2022) and „Film eye“ (2025).

Outstanding title:

Every story should have a beginning, a middle and an end, but not always in that order, said Jean Luc Godard. This novel takes place during one day and night (or not even that much!) in the life of Boris, or if you prefer, of the Writer.

It is not experimental in form, but flows classically, from beginning to end, without any deviations from the planned order, unless one takes into account the constant reflections and reminiscences regarding the things that happen around the main protagonist, which skillfully intertwine the past, the present and the future, which makes things uncertain. But what is quite certain is that this story begins and ends with the crowing of an early rooster: Cuckoo-cuckoo…

Latest title:

Ten years after “Film.mkd”, the author “gifts” us with another book of film essays, the fourth in a row, taking care of the fragile journalism in this field, whose editions over the years can be counted on the fingers of one hand. The edition begins with the treatment of Macedonian cinematography in this period, followed by a look at European and American cinematography over the past few years, and then the section on film festivals. Towards the end, there are two specialized topics in which texts on music and film, as well as film anniversaries, are represented.

The central part of the book is dedicated to the Austrian filmmaker Ulrich Seidl, who was KineNova 2024’s laureate and who on stage, when receiving the award, read a “manifesto” about the state of film art that will be relevant and quoted for a long time to come.
