Biography<\/h5>\n\n\n\n
Mitko Madzunkov <\/strong>(b. 1943) is a storyteller, novelist, playwright and essayist. He graduated from the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade. He has spent most of his working life in the Library of the City of Belgrade. His first books were also published in Serbian language. Mad\u017eunkov is a member of the Macedonian Writers\u2019 Association since 1986 and of the Association of Independent Writers, as well as the Association of Writers of Serbia (1970). He is also member of Macedonian Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He has won many literary awards \u2013 \u201cIsidora Sekuli\u0107\u201c for the stories collection \u201cKill the talking dog\u201d (1974), \u201cRacin award\u201d for \u201cThe edge of the world\u201d, \u201cVojdan Chernodrinski\u201d, The Novel of the Year by \u201cDetska Radost\u201d and in 2013, for the title \u201cThe birds from last year\u2019s nests\u201d, Mad\u017eunkov was awarded with \u201cUtrinski vesnik\u201d Novel of the Year Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His works include short stories: \u201cStrange Encounter\u201d (Belgrade 1970, Skopje 2010), \u201cKill the Talkative Dog\u201d (Belgrade 1973, Skopje 1988, 2011), \u201cClouds over the Knotgrass\u201d (Skopje 1974), \u201cThe Smell of the Earth\u201d (Skopje 1984); short prose: \u201cThe Edge of the World\u201d (Belgrade 1984, Skopje 1985), \u201cParadoxical Dream\u201d (Skopje 1987), \u201cThe Tree of Narayana\u201d (Skopje 1998), \u201cThe Gifts of Heaven\u201d (Pan\u010devo 2007), \u201cThe Abduction of Europe\u201d (2008); novels: \u201cThe Tower on the Hill\u201d (Belgrade 1980, Skopje 1981, 1999), \u201cThe Home of Alexander\u201d (Skopje 1992, Belgrade 2004, Skopje 2005), \u201cTowards the Other Land\u201d (Skopje 1993, Bitola 2008), \u201cThe Age of Reindeers\u201d (Skopje 2003, Sofa 2010); essays: \u201cThe Lonely Stork and His Flock\u201d (Skopje 2000), \u201cChekhov or the Secret of Storytelling\u201d (Belgrade 2006) and \u201cThe Birthplace of Literature\u201d (Skopje 2008). He is also author of several plays (\u201cThe Big Grass Snake\u201d, \u201cThe Shadow\u201d, \u201cWaste Land\u201d, \u201cRoad to Lychnidos\u201d, \u201cThe Mill\u201d, \u201cGreat Wonder\u201d etc.) staged in theatres and published in separate books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Monumental literary achievement which covers the events of just one single day, arranged in 19 separate chapters in which we meet a gallery of impressive characters. Each of the characters is self-specific, plunged into its own maelstrom of events. This is an urban novel, a testimony about today\u2019s current people and their destinies, a novel about tragically lonely individuals through which the collective karma is broken. The reader finds many layers into this story. At some point, it is a documentary through the writer ironizes the socialism but also the eternal themes of love, death, family etc. English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rare example of a magnificent epic saga, which is actually a picture of our time, of our immediate past, of our present and nearest future. The time in Mad\u017eunkov\u2019s book is not measured by a clock, and history it gathered in one place. Polyphonic story in which each sentence hides multiple meanings and branches into multiple possible streams. This worked showed why this authors unwaveringly maintain the quality of our domestic literature. It is a novel about a search of the lost time.
